Areas of practice
Abi Rajkumar is a barrister with criminal law experience across prosecution, defence and public policy. She was formerly a prosecutor in Crown Chambers with the Northern Territory Director of Public Prosecutions and a Senior Solicitor with Legal Aid Northern Territory. She has appeared in complex indictable matters, including serious violence and sexual offences. Abi has also served as Senior Adviser to the Northern Territory Attorney-General and the Commonwealth Attorney-General, contributing to legislative reform and national justice policy including the Aboriginal Justice Agreement, and Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing reform.
Abi's practice is grounded in clear communication, careful preparation, strategic judgment, and effective advocacy. Drawing on her experience on both sides of the bar table, and her time in politics and government, she brings a balanced and forensic approach to litigation.
Abi holds a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, where she studied as a John Monash Scholar and Frank Knox Fellow. Her broader professional interests include criminal justice reform, rehabilitative sentencing options, and improving court processes for vulnerable accused persons and complainants.
Abi founded the Northern Territory branch of the Australian Institute of International Affairs and served as President from 2020 - 2023. Abi has served as a Committee Member and Vice-President of the Criminal Lawyers Association of the Northern Territory since 2021 and remains actively engaged in human rights advocacy and law reform initiatives.
